LOVECRAFTIAN CLIFFS NOTES FOR ECH-PI-EL'S:
THE CATS OF ULTHAR

by

Franklyn Searight

In Ulthar idle felines doze,
Lethargic, free of strife;
They're plump and sassy, unafraid,
Contented with their life.
But years before, a man and wife
Would nightly kill those cats
Who wandered near their small abode
In search of mice and rats.
One day a caravan arrived
Of nomads quite bizarre,
Adept in trade and reading palms,
Who'd journeyed long and far.
A little boy along with them,
With kitty sooty black,
Sobbed when it disappeared one night
Close by the couple's shack.
The youngster prayed to primal gods;
The travelers departed;
The village mousers disappeared
As fretful rumors started.
And when the tabbies did return
Town folks were shocked to see
Two skeletons picked clean. The cats
Had dined extensively!
